Flash Fiction, The adventures of Max

Arguing with Ghost.

Staring blankly at his textbook, the clock ticked by, the sun going lower and lower. The moon rising higher and higher, the sky getting dark.

“So this is why your grades are so awful. You don’t study.”

“Shut up Ghost!” Max growled.

“Hey let’s go out, this is boring, and you’re not doing anything!”

“What part of, I’m grounded, do you not understand.”

“O come on, its not like you have to listen to her.”

“Yes I do. It may be a surprise to you but I actually respect my Mother and her decisions.”

“But I’m bored…”

“Well go away than and hang out somewhere else!!!!”

“But I wanna hang out with you.”

“Well too bad!”

“Max who are you talking too?!!!” Footsteps thundered up the stairs and his door was swung open with a loud clang. Dark beady black eyes swept over Max’s room.

“Who were you talking to Max?” asked his Mother.

“Myself” Max answered plainly. “Just bored is all.”

“Well you should be!” His Mother snarled. Slamming the door behind her, her footseps thundering back down the stairs.

“Holy shit.” said Ghost, “she scared the crap out of me.”

“mmm did she, you’re a ghost aren’t you. She shouldn’t scare you. I thought you’ve seen some pretty scary shit.”

“Max nothing is as terrifying as a Mother’s wrath…

she still looks pretty mad at you.”

“Oh well whose fault is that.”

“It’s technically your own fault right though. I mean I did tell you not to do it.”

“Oh shut up.”

“… You’re so mean Max”

“oh for gods sake lets go out then.”

“yayyy”

Max opened the window of his bedroom expertly and climbed onto the roof like a nimble fox. Ghost swiftly followed him.

“So now we are outside, are you happy?”

“We’re just sitting on the roof of your house.”

“Yep.”

“This isn’t what I meant.”

“Oh really, you should have been specific.”

“You are so mean Max.”

“hahaha”

Max and ghost watched the starlit sky from Max’s thatched roof in strange silence.

The night went on.

Max goes to the Park. pt.3 A Party in the park.

Max found himself going back and forth on the swing next to Mr.Ghost. He couldn’t help but wonder how he’d gotten himself into such a peculiar situation. Sitting in the park in the middle of the night with some stranger. If it wasn’t for the fact that Meme was enjoying herself so much, barking like crazy whilst chasing after her little tail, Max would have long ago hurried home.

“How old are you Max?” asked Mr. Ghost.

“Huh..ummm…”

“It’s not like I’m asking you a hard question, am I?”

“No it’s just asking someones age is a bit rude, right?”

“What? How?!… You are some weird kid, it’s not like I asked you what size your d*** is. Are you a girl? You’re not old? How on earth is asking your age rude?!” Mr.Ghost had an exasperated expression on his face and stared at Max as if he were crazy.

“I’m not a girl! I just…my Mum told me that it’s rude to ask someones age on a first meeting.”

“You’re not that bright are you Max?”

“Hey-”

“I’m just saying,” interrupted Mr.Ghost, “your Mum probably meant that it’s rude on a first meeting with a woman, and most likely a woman you want to date. Woman are sensitive about their age, more so than men. So for a good first impression not asking their age is better.”

“…” Max didn’t know how to respond.

“Max are you a woman?” asked Mr. Ghost.

“Nooo.” Max slowly said.

“Max do I look like I want to date you?”

“…” Max just blinked, not knowing how to respond.

“Since the answer to both is no, I think you can tell me your goddamn age.”

“…”

“Max how old are you?”

“17.”

“Well done.” Mr.Ghost purred, he reached his hand out and slowly patted Max on the head, stroking his hair like Max was his pet. “Well since you’re 17 that means your old enough to come to a fun little gathering with me.”

“A gathering! A party?” Max was surprised but also disinterested, he’d been invited to some but never went since he was naturally an introvert. The idea of a party seemed pointless to him.

“Yes a party.” said Mr Ghost, he jumped off the swing, his purple dyed hair rippling in the wind, his piercings jingling. He grabbed Max’s hands into his, “We’re going to a party right now.”

“Right now!”

“Yep.” Mr Ghost grinned at him and then pulled Max towards the forest area of the park where there were a multitude of trees and the white light of the lamps couldn’t reach.

Max felt startled and terrified. “You know what, actually Ghost, I’d rather not y-y-you know, I gotta take care of Meme and stuff and I guess it’s getting late.”

“Meme will be fine, and the night is still young.” Mr.Ghost placidly replied.

Max didn’t have time to respond as by this point they had already entered the forest. To his surprise as they walked in rather than darkness greeting them there was actually a red light that shined bright, illuminating the forest.

With every step closer Max heard the thrumming of instruments. As they walked closer to the source of this red light, Max ย realised it was a huge fire, he saw smaller white lights dancing around the fire, then around these white lights there were people-like figures all dancing and singing around the fire.

As Max got even closer he saw that these white lights were actually very small people with wings. Fairies!!! “No way” Max whispered out loud. His surprise caused Mr.Ghost to smile.

“There aren’t just fairies. If you look closely there are Trolls, Dwarves, and Elves.” Mr.Ghost muttered lightly into Max’s ears.ย “You are the only living human to ever witness such a grand party Max, you should be excited.”

“I am.” Max breathed, his eyes filled with wonder his heart beating like crazy. “Wait aren’t you human too Mr.Ghost!?”

“I am.”

“Then-”

“But I’m not a living human Max.”

Max goes to the Park. pt 2. Meeting Mr. Ghost.

Max sat on a swing as he watched Meme run up and down the abandoned park. He swayed, slowly, back and forth. Each move he made created a loud creaking noise that would give the most brave warriors the shivers. Kree-eee-eeek.

If it wasn’t for the fact that Max could see Meme running up and down the park he would have ran all the way back home. There was something really creepy about being at a Park in the middle of the night. It was definitely not something Max did often.

He had taken Meme for a walk this late because he’d forgotten to that afternoon, additionally he just wanted to go out and have some space, it was just Max and his Mother at home and sometimes it felt so suffocating he just had to leave. It’s a teenage thing.

Max sighed whilst shivering, why did he walk out tonight with no jacket. It was then that he felt a tap on his shoulder. “You alright kid, you look cold?”

Max jumped and fell off the swing crashing back-first on the wet grass below.

“Whoa didn’t mean to scare you, you alright?” The man speaking was very tall, so tall in fact that as Max dusted himself off and stood up he still had to strain his neck to look him in the eye, and Max was 6ft.

He looked like he was in his early twenties, he had his hair died purple and was wearing one of those orange jumpsuits that you only ever see people in videos during the 90’s wearing or criminals. He had all kinds of piercings on his ears, from scaffolding to his helix and all of his lobe was pierced. It was an impressive amount of metal hanging off of his ears that was for sure.

Max gulped, he’d never met this man before. Although his town wasn’t small it couldn’t be considered big either. It was because of this that Max’s town had a very low crime rate, since nothing ever exciting happened here nobody batted an eye if Max went outย late since it was safe, however now it didn’t seem so safe.

“Hey kid, I asked if you were alright?”

“Oh..” Max gulped. “Yes… yes yes I am.”

“Geez what are you stuttering for, I’m not scary, I’m not gonna bite your head off.” the man said with an exasperated expression on his face.

“I’m sorry…I didn’t mean to. I’ve just never met you before.”

“Whoa kid, this may be news for you but there are plenty of people you’ve never met before out there in the big wide world. You need to go out more. You must be an introvert or something.”

Max didn’t know how to respond. He was a serious introvert but hearing this stranger tell him that made him feel a bit mad.

Max didn’t have time to compose himself before the young man’s big but slender hand was extended out to him. “The name is Ghost, Mr.Ghost. Pleasure to meet you.”

Max paused surprised… “umm I’m Max”

I’ve always thought it would be cool to meet a ghost in the park. I’ve always wondered what a ghost would be like and rather than something freaky and invisible I thought what if they’re pretty normal? They’re just living out their own lives and what not. Perhaps people have no idea they’re ghosts and it’s just a casual nice person you meet once or twice and have a pleasant conversation with. Maybe it’s that small kid you saw walking across the street one time or something. I don’t know but that’s the thought process that made me think of Mr Ghost.
