Arguing with Ghost.

Staring at his textbook, the clock ticked by, the sun going lower and lower. The moon rising higher and higher, the sky getting dark.

“So this is why your grades are so awful. You don’t study.”

“Shut up Ghost!” Max growled.

“Hey let’s go out, this is boring, and you’re not doing anything!”

“What part of, I’m grounded, do you not understand.”

“O come on, its not like you have to listen to her.”

“Yes I do. It may be a surprise to you but I actually respect my Mother and her decisions.”

“But I’m bored…”

“Well go away than and hang out somewhere else!!!!”

“But I wanna hang out with you.”

“Well too bad!”

“Max who are you talking too?!!!” Footsteps thundered up the stairs and his door was swung open with a loud clang. Dark beady black eyes swept over Max’s room.

“Who were you talking to Max?” asked his Mother.

“Myself” Max answered plainly. “Just bored is all.”

“Well you should be!” His Mother snarled. Slamming the door behind her, her footseps thundering back down the stairs.

“Holy shit.” said Ghost, “she scared the crap out of me.”

“mmm did she, you’re a ghost aren’t you. She shouldn’t scare you. I thought you’ve seen some pretty scary shit.”

“Max nothing is as terrifying as a Mother’s wrath…

she still looks pretty mad at you.”

“Oh well whose fault is that.”

“It’s technically your own fault right though. I mean I did tell you not to do it.”

“Oh shut up.”

“… You’re so mean Max”

“oh for gods sake lets go out then.”

“yayyy”

Max opened the window of his bedroom expertly and climbed onto the roof like a nimble fox. Ghost swiftly followed him.

“So now we are outside, are you happy?”

“We’re just sitting on the roof of your house.”

“Yep.”

“This isn’t what I meant.”

“Oh really, you should have been specific.”

“You are so mean Max.”

“hahaha”

Max and ghost watched the starlit sky from Max’s thatched roof in strange silence.

The night went on.

A Fairy Tale Prince- Chapter 12

I woke up on a comfortable canopy bed, the sheets were made out of linen and silk, the pillows felt soft like they had duck feathers inside them. It reminded me of my luxurious bed back at home. However, I was immediately made uncomfortable by the people standing around the bed staring at me.

There were six boys, all of different heights and ethnic backgrounds, however one thing they did have in common was that they were all stunningly handsome and wore old fashioned clothing. Or rather than old fashioned it was more traditional. One boy who seemed to have Asian heritage was dressed in a Haori, another boy who also seemed of Asian descent was wearing a Zhidou. Another boy of African descent was wearing a purple and lavender coloured Dashiki. Two other boys that seemed to originate from Europe somewhere wore three-part costumes; with breeches, waist coat, and coat that were all made of elaborately embroidered fabrics that were decorated with some jewels. The last boy wore a long red and purple coat that was embroidered with gold thread, he wore black boots, he had a linen shirt and woollen tunic underneath his coat was a decorated broad sword in a sheath hanging off the belt at his side. Yes, they were all wearing very traditional clothing.

The two boys in the three part costume had the same face, as in they looked exactly identical. I couldn’t help feeling surprised because it was my first time meeting twins. They both had very handsome faces with strong jawlines, pretty brown eyes, freckled skin and curly brown hair. They were the first to notice I’d woken up and they said in unison, “He’s awake!”

Then the boy in the long red and purple coat, who had long flowing blonde hair, like gold, and stunning pair of sky blue eyes said, “So this is the new Prince, huh. What’s your name?”

I froze

“What, has a cat got your tongue!? I asked for you Goddamn name!” It seemed like he had a seriously short temper.

“Andromeda!” I shrieked, “Andromeda Star!”

“pssttt!!” The blonde boy snorted, “What kind of name is that? haha, you were named after a freaking Galaxy.” He laughed loudly, and all the other boys around him also laughed with him. “That is hilarious!!!”

I was beginning to get angry because nobody had ever laughed at my name before. However, I didn’t yell at them. I let them laugh. I was wary of them and cautious. I didn’t know where I was, but if I could trust that bastard Ray’s words, then I was in some scary death match. I shouldn’t trust anyone. I should be wary of everyone.

I looked around the room and it seemed like a normal, albeit luxurious bedroom. However one notable factor was that there were no windows and only one steel door, which looked really out of place when you stared at the rest of the wooden/oak themed room. This was a prison.

“Wow, are you not even going to say anything as we laugh at you, how lame” said the blonde boy.

I ignored the urge to punch that boy in the face and instead said, “So aren’t you going to tell me your names. It’s only polite.”

The blonde boys face dropped as if I had poured cold water on him. It made me happy that I had annoyed him. The boy ‘tsked’ then stated, “I am Aaron Eagleton, known around here as the Canary Prince.”

I was surprised because he called himself a Prince but just as I was about to comment on it the two twin boys spoke up. The one to my left whom had a blue handkerchief coming out of the pocket of his waistcoat boasted, “I am the fabulous Enzo Bernard, known as the North Prince–”

“I am Louis Bernard, the adored South Prince.” interrupted his twin brother, whom was only distinguishable by the red handkerchief he had coming out of his waistcoat. Enzo didn’t seem too happy to have been interrupted and glared at his brother. Louis wiggled his eyebrows at Enzo, like he was saying ‘I dare you’, just as it seemed like they were going to break into a fight the tall handsome African boy separated them and calmly said, “If you two start another fight I hope you can deal with the consequences.” At his words the pair went pale and nodded in submission.

“I am Abimbola Azikiwe, the Proxy Prince.” he stated.

As he finished the boy wearing the Haori, whom had long flowing black hair, gorgeously big black eyes and a ghostly pale face said “I am Riku Fukushima, I am known as the Wise Prince and this” he gestured to the last boy who wore the Zhidou and had his hair tied up in a scholarly manner, “is Wang Wei, the Lotus Prince. He is a man of few words.” Wang simply nodded at me.

“And” announced Aaron, “We are the Princes of  Section 1, your new family, Andromeda.”

I stared at them blankly. Family. What was going on I thought. I exhaled and collected my bearings. “Well, it’s truly a pleasure to meet all of you. I’ll do my best to remember all your names. But, rather than exchanging pleasantries shouldn’t you all tell me what’s going on.”

“I think I like him.” proclaimed Riku, “he’s straightforward and to the point.”

“Be quiet.” snapped Aaron. Riku glared at him but didn’t retort. “I’ll explain to you what is going on. I will tell you about the hell that you have entered.” Aaron stated. “However, that is only if you swear loyalty to our group.” he said. “Are you with us, or are you against us?” As he spoke he withdrew the long broad sword he had hanging off of his belt, and pointed it at me. On the tip of the sword there was some dried blood and I felt the room go cold and my heart beat race. ‘ba-dump, ba-dump, ba-dump.”

And here is the long awaited and overdue chapter 12 for ‘A Fairy Tale Prince” I am sorry that this took so long to come out. It’s because I’ve been adapting the story and re-writing parts of it. Also I’m entering the Dragonfly Tea Short story competition. So I’ve been focusing on finishing my entry for it. I am still focusing on that entry so it may be a while until you see continuous daily chapters for this webnovel. I will try to make it three chapters a week.

Thank you so much for reading and Stay tuned!!!

Fated to be

Max reached his hand out to grab a Haribo packet from the top shelf, yet as his hand touched the sweet packet so did a hand belonging to someone else. Max pulled with all his might, ‘This is the last packet.” he thought, ‘There is no way I’m giving this up, I need to fuel my sweet addiction for today.’

Max turned to face the owner of the hand which was attempting to steal his sweets. Just as he was about to angrily yell ‘try another store’ he was stunned into silence.

“Max, is that you!?” exclaimed the owner of the hand, “Oh my God!! It’s me Tyler! Don’t you remember me!”

Max gasped, how could he forget. It was Tyler his best friend, or more like former best friend. They had gone to the same school since they were young, they had been neighbours, their parents had been friends, they even shared the same birthday. However, Tyler moved away with his family abroad, and Max had been left all alone.

They had exchanged letters but eventually they both got tired of sending them. Now Max was a University Student living in his student accommodation. He had long since believed that they would never meet again, in fact he assumed Tyler had forgotten about him entirely. Yet here they met in an old, run down corner store, like fate was pulling them together.

“Tyler I can’t believe this.”

“What are the chances that we would meet like this Max!”

“Well I always said we were fated to be—”

“Fated to be best friends!!”

This is a short 260 word flash-fiction piece I was going to enter into a competition but I ended up submitting a different one instead. This story is also my own secret aspiration, there are a few friends that I have completely lost touch with that I would love to meet again. So I really emphasise with Max. I hope you enjoyed reading this.

Chapter 10- Human Nature

Mex Cillian

As I opened my eyes I could see that the sun was no longer up and the burgundy moon hung in the black sky like a devils eye. Dust swept around us, only when it settled did I notice the derelict building in front of us; it was a grey old complex that looked like it would topple over at the winds slightest touch and break into millions of tiny pieces.  Half of it was sunk into the ground and the other half looked like it was clinging to life. It was pitiful.

“What is this place?” I asked Cal, who was stretching, panting heavily, his breath crystalising into ice.

“Geesh, that took a lot out of me.” Cal moaned, looking up at me, “This is our temporary shelter, it isn’t some swanky hotel, but compared to some other places I’ve seen, this is a paradise. We need to lie low while we’re still in Human territory.” Cal reassured as he saw the wary look I was giving the building. “We’re only staying the night until the sun comes up; some scary things come out when it’s dark so it’s better not to travel right now, trust me.”

“What kind of scary things?”

“Believe me, you don’t need to know. Now that you don’t have your memories it’s better that you learn these stuff gradually. Some things are just too disturbing for words.”

I nodded and began heading towards the entrance or what I thought was an entrance but in reality just some gaping hole in the side. Cal jumped to his feet and jogged to catch up.

“You know.” Cal said. “This place used to be a shopping centre, not only here; all of this wasteland used to be one gigantic city district with massive buildings and houses everywhere. It used to be the place to go… People used have a lot of fun here.” He muttered the last part under his breath, so I only just heard it. “But then of course that isn’t the case anymore.” He grumbled angrily, kicking the dirt. “About 100 years ago this place became a nuclear war zone, I think it was some dispute between countries, I don’t really care. All I remember is seeing crowds of people and the next everyone was gone. We only just made it out of there.” Cal kicked a big rock, that was twice the size of his head- may I add- and sent it flying. “And do you know what really makes me mad?!” Cal continued I nodded although I think it had been a rhetorical question. “Is that that stupid government, that dumb police, The Capital and their stupid hound dogs, think they have the right to blame us for all the things that they’ve done. They blame us for all their wars, their casualties, their dumbass mistakes. And they think that by killing creatures like us the world will become some happy place. Sometimes people are just so stupid.”

He fumed for a second, and went silent, but what he had said raised my curiosity. First off 100 years ago, I knew I was probably older than I looked and I had lived for a long time but seriously. I had so many questions I wanted to ask Cal.

We made it into the ‘building’ which was no better than the outer appearance, but it was definitely more comfortable than outside at least, well anything was more comfortable than outside. Cal settled on the ground, leaning against a brick wall that was chipped and looked ready to collapse, but Cal didn’t care. I did the same. Plopping down right next to Cal. I opened my mouth to ask him the questions that we all probably wanted to know yet he spoke before I could.

“There are probably a lot of things you want to know right.” Cal started, his sharp blue eyes staring at me with some scary intensity. “Well I’ll tell you, but it’s kind of a long story. So just be prepared to stay up all night.” He paused, and I shuffled into a more comfortable position whilst he rummaged in his jacket that was hanging around his waist and tossed me a large bottle of water. Where had he been keeping it? His jacket must have been bigger than I originally thought.

As I drank, Cal began talking again,“You’ve probably figured out that I’m not human and that the same goes for you, right?”

“Yeah.”

“Let me begin telling you that there are two sides.”

“Two sides.”

“Yh. The Humans and Us.” He sipped some water, “We are nicknamed by the Humans as Creatures of the Abyss. That’s because they claim we came out of nowhere, that we are the origin of all evil…Of course we aren’t though, that’s just Human propaganda bullshit. Keeps all the other humans under control, makes them think they have a common enemy. That’s why Humans are dangerous and incredibly hostile to our kind. Even their police force will butcher us on contact. If I hadn’t come in time their police would have definitely made you suffer.”

“They were the police force?” I was surprised, for some reason when I thought of police I envisioned hard working earnest people fighting for justice and they definitely didn’t look like it. Cal just nodded sadly.

“Yeah, it makes me so depressed about what society is like these days.” Cal sighed, “Don’t ask any questions anymore Mex, I told you this is going to take all night so wait until after.” I gave him an apologetic look and Cal coughed and then said, “Our kind has been around a lot longer than humans have. Humans egotistically believe they own the world because they have the superiority in numbers and in the past they built tall buildings and advanced states. Due to a treaty made long ago, called the Yggdraisal treaty, many of our kind decided not to meddle in Human affairs. We lived peacefully with them in coexistence. However humanity is a destructive race by nature, that are selfish and sceptical. Each civilisation they built, each empire would eventually crumble and fall given enough time. Our race used to stand by and watch as they caused their own senseless destruction, however that all changed when they began destroying the Earth along with them.” I was entranced by Cal’s words and leaned forward as I listened attentively. “They made weapons of mass destruction, they made biological weapons that spread diseases and famine, they polluted the water and the air, they destroyed the world that we shared together.” Cal’s eyes seemed to reflect the horrors of war and his purple and blue flames began to spark around him. I wondered what tragedies he had seen. “Because of this many of our own kind struggled to survive. Spirits and nymphs of nature that belonged to the forests or the rivers, our friends died one by one.” As he spoke I felt growing emotions of anger, frustration and sadness.

“Our species were always kind to the humans and never gave them trouble, allowed them to reign over this Earth, and that was how they repaid our kindness. That’s why the leaders of our race decided that we must go to war and put the humans in their place. 11.03.2389 was the day the war began.”

He grabbed my hand, “Mex, you are one of our great leaders.”

Timothy

“What is this?” I asked as I felt the floor shaking with some strange vibrations.

Fallen winked at me, “Oh that is the fun job I have for you.” she turned from me and began walking away, “Aren’t you coming Timothy.”

“Ah! Yes!” I yelped and followed her like the dog I was.

Half an hour passed.

Fallen and I had been walking through endless corridors and I was beginning to feel wary of. I honestly didn’t care what kind of job Fallen wanted me to do, I trusted one of the greatest warriors of my era, but for some reason I was feeling unnerved.

I didn’t like it; I didn’t like the vibrations I was feeling under my toes. Harmonious waves. I could hear each buzz in my ear as if little fairies were singing in it. Damn fairies, just thinking of those Abyss pests made my fingers twitch, wishing I had my gun at hand. What was this?

“What is this?” I finally aired my thoughts.

“This is a state secret.” Her sexy voice was filled with seriousness, “Imagine this.” She said, “What if you could change time, or become invincible or open a pocket dimension and hide all your deepest darkest secrets inside.”

“I don’t understand.” I breathed, she patted my back.

“Bear with me.” She said “This is the weapon we have been developing, one that can give us an advantage over the Abyss.”

“An advantage…What do you mean?”

Fallen smiled viciously. “What if we could mimic their abilities, those of the abyss.” Her eyes glimmered with fanaticism, “Yet more than mimic them, we could rewrite history itself and eradicate the Abyss entirely.”

“How would that be possible…unless…the experiments the labs said failed…succeeded.”

She smiled at me, “You’re one intelligent boy Timothy” I couldn’t tell whether she was mocking me or not, “Yes what if we re-wrote this world. There are many versions of earth, different dimensions with people that share the same souls as us but have lived out entirely different lives. We have been developing a method to access these worlds using knowledge we have gathered from Abyss creatures. With this we could reset the Earth, take away all the problems. We could go outside without masks or heavy gear.”

She reached out her arms like she was seeing this dream in front of her.“When the scale broke a few hundred years ago, the monsters came and attacked us. Now we will bite back, we will avenge our fallen comrades.”

“You sound just like Tia.”

“You mean Major Tia Kyoya.” she laughed, “Oh we most definitely share the same ideals. However the one I need right now is you, Timothy.”

As she said that we walked into a bright cavern and I saw the most bewitching sight. There were blue, pink, and green lights that danced and swayed, they burned like fire and yet weren’t hot or cold. It was vibrant, constantly changing colours. And at the Centre of these things was a rock of ice; it was transparent and inside of it I could see a man. No an abyss creature, his hair white his skin deathly pale. For some reason it reminded of the Abyss creature that escaped from our base earlier, I think its name was Mex. Yet unlike Mex it’s white hair was so long it wrapped around it body, and it had strange rainbow coloured markings on its body. It was naked, in the fetal position and frozen in the ice. It was the source of the vibrations.

Fallen gazed at it, she stared at it with disgust. She despised it.

“It is called Sync. It was the first creature of the Abyss humanity ever came into contact with. It is one of the three immortals that we know of.”

“Immortal!?”

“I’ll explain it later. But he is the creature that has all the answers to defeating the abyss, and you are going to help me find these answers.”

“Me! But..But how?”

“You will link with it.”

“Link?!”

Chapter 10!!! yayy 🙂 Dear Readers do tell me what you think of the story so far. And also which side are you on. Humanity or the Abyss?

Chapter 8- Seduction comes in heels

Timothy

I went down to the generator room, or the basement, whatever you call it. At first I was kind of lost; I really had never needed to use the basement before, I wasn’t a technician. As far as I knew the basement was used to host a multitude of engines, boilers, containers, and other things that I probably couldn’t comprehend. Overall it was a very important place, that if damaged could cause the destruction of the entire base as well as burden the Capital. That’s probably one of the reasons why I had never been there before. Because of its value the basement was guarded to the highest extent, like a vault or something, with five big thick metal doors that each had retinal scanners, gel thumb scanners that even checked your pulse, sensors, breathing monitors, and temperature monitors. There are lasers that will mercilessly slice you to bits and it’s rumoured that there are cameras everywhere; they literally have no blind spot.

Of course this was all heresy, I hadn’t actually been there myself until now, and the place honestly gave me the creeps. Personally I believed all the rumours, this place is the weakness of our entire operations so it had to be guarded. Although at the same time you could call it a strength, having all the things that matter in one place makes it easier to protect. I don’t really care about the pros and cons though. That’s why as I was walking there I was bored out of my mind; my every step was weighed with the thought of all that paper work I was going to have to do just to get inside there and turn on that damn generator. What was it again RF5, or something?

I whistled hopelessly as I got into the elevator shaft that would lead me to the forsaken basement. As the metal gated doors began to close another person walked in, but I didn’t look at them, it’s easier to mind your own business. But, a second after I thought that I felt slender fingers on my shoulder and a husky seductive voice mutter,“Why do you look so bored, little boy?”

Seriously at that moment I felt my heart skip four or five beats, especially when I looked at the owner of the voice, it was Mrs. Capital, as in Nancy Capitol, the wife of the man that led The Capital. The spokeswoman that always said ‘the world may be dying around us, but we’ll prosper on.’ I was standing in the same elevator shaft as this woman, the woman said to have destroyed a wave of mutants and Abyss members in the early days. Everyone, even the head of the Capital called her Fallen. A warrior amongst warriors.

Fallen was leaning on the other side of the elevator with a slightly bemused smile on her painted red lips. I had completely frozen, I was staring at her; just looking at her in dumbfounded astonishment. I had to stop. I hurriedly saluted then pinched myself hard with my nails and coughed. “Oh I am sorry Miss Capital but I’m not bored, I don’t know what made you think that.” She chuckled at my words.

“Please call me Fallen my dear, everyone does, I only said that because that was just the way you stood, you really shouldn’t stand like that.” She gave me a grin that sent my heart racing, “Every stretch of time on this world should be enjoyed, life is filled with wonders, if we don’t enjoy them sooner it’s all just gonna end.”  she pressed her delicate nails to my neck and made a slitting motion with it. “Don’t you think so Timothy?” she asked.

“Yes!…Wait, how do you know my name?” I asked stupidly, looking into her deep black eyes that shimmered with mystery,“How wouldn’t I know your name?” she replied, “It is my job to lead every person in Capital, if I didn’t know the name of one of the ten great Majors, and especially the name of the youngest at that, then what kind of leader would I be?”

I felt my cheeks going hot and red, what a stupid question to ask, man was I dumb, I had just succeeded in making myself look like an idiot in front of my boss. I inwardly groaned, but despite this Fallen seemed as happy as day. Everything about her was just so perfect, compared to myself I was an imperfection. I wondered what such a high ranking member of the Syndicate was doing on the surface and at this base at that.

Just then the elevator stopped and two men with heavily loaded guns opened the gates, although I think their guns were pointless as sub-automatic machine guns were also pointing at us from the ceiling straight into the small box like elevator. If we had been enemies we would have barely lasted seconds before we were blown to bits. As I admired the weaponry Fallen had already stepped out of the shaft and the guards bowed at her, I realised this only a second later and attempted to get out just like her but every gun was on me in seconds,

“Do you have access to be here.” Asked the burliest, thuggish looking man; he was weak, I could tell, if I really wanted to I could have disarmed him in sixteen different ways. But, I wasn’t going too. I just yawned casually and was about to answer them when Fallen said, “Don’t worry about all the normal procedures, he’s with me.” My eyes widened and so did the soldiers. I was ‘with her.’ This was the first time I’d heard about it, but I didn’t mind. If it let me do what I needed to do faster then she could say I was her slave for all I cared.

After a five second pause they let us though, and we bypassed every piece of security without fail, so this was what it is was like to have power. Everywhere she went people gave her adoring smiles, or they bowed and curtsied, even if they held guns or wore awkward combat gear. She just pleasantly smiled in return- which seemed to be enough for them. It took us a full five minutes to get through the guards and the gates- which were as big and security tight as rumoured. At the last door it was like going into a different world. It was cold, the temperature at least 5 degrees, not to mention there were only dim lights coming from the ceiling and everything here was metallic. There was no colour, as if the world had turned bleak.

As we went into this metallic room, the seven heavy thick vaulted doors closing behind us, Fallen relaxed. Seeming to be pleased to get away from the general crowd, she sighed,“Man, I just hate it when people treat me like I’m a princess.”

“Well you kind of are one aren’t you?”

She gave me a dark look, “I’m kidding.” I said quickly, Fallen ignored me, and then she said,“I wanted to ask you if you would accompany me on an errand.”

“Me!” I exclaimed

“Yes you, well that’s only if you’re not busy.”

I was getting an offer of a lifetime and she was asking me if I was too busy.

“Of course I’ll help, I only came down to switch on a flick generator, but I’m generally at your disposal Fallen.” She smiled at that like I had said something extremely amusing.

“Well you can switch the flick generator on now if you want.”

“Now?” I looked around and realised that we were in a warehouse area with rows upon rows of hundreds of generators.I felt my cheeks go bright red; I had been so distracted with Fallen that I had forgotten my own objective.

Sheepishly I looked around trying to find the specific generator RF5, but it was like finding a certain strand of hair in the middle of your head amongst loads of different hairs. After five minutes of me wandering around aimlessly- Fallen following slowly behind- I turned around in defeat. Fallen was looking at me, again wearing that amused expression and it made me feel like someone was pouring hot magma over me; I’d never been so embarrassed before.

“So it’s true that men never ask for directions.” She laughed her husky voice going up and down in waves. I didn’t say anything but this time I let her lead the way- which I probably should have done before because she found the RF5 generator in a matter of seconds.

“Were you really trying Timothy?” she asked, “You seemed distracted, and you should have noticed the directions and found it easily.” She abruptly went closer to me and put her forehead on mine. My face felt suddenly hot and feverish, she was so close to me, so near, and smelt so sweet. “It seems you’re coming down with a fever.” She stated, Fallen had been only checking my temperature but for a second I thought I had been seeing stars, I was blushing and everything.

I coughed and hoped that the dim light of the warehouse hid my face. Only then did I feel them, the vibrations.

Tia Kyoya

Ashley was looking at me with that smug expression of his, like he completely loved the shock in my eyes. It was true, at that moment in time I probably had a comical look of shock on my face. So much so that even I would of laughed at myself, but that was beside the point; I just couldn’t believe that some undergraduate intelligence agent had more information than I had. Not to mention the information itself, it was too astonishing for words.  Where had he just taken me? I wasn’t sure but we were now standing back where we were before. I realised now that he wasn’t a Creature of the Abyss, our own technology had advanced to such a degree that we could now use Abyss abilities. ‘If this got out’ I thought…No I couldn’t say anything, it was the same as shooting myself in the back.

I breathed and looked around me but no one was around, literally no one was there. Ashley had been standing next to me, but he’d left like that. I felt chills. Why had he transferred to the surface team? What was head quarters trying to accomplish? Who was he really? So many questions.

Was re-reading this and cringing at the grammar, I thought I edited this better, but alas I wrote this story when I was 14 so bear with me. I’m going to get a friend to edit my stories for me, so bear with my bad language for now.

Chapter 7- Grey Undertones

Mex Cillian

I was suddenly in a yard; the air was stifling, intense, thick, and heavy. I could see heat waves lingering around. I gasped, shock making me claw for air- however I was the only one- as the man next to me instantly began pacing. Glancing nervously around himself,“We need to get out of here, quickly.” he muttered.

He turned towards me, looking at me but not really seeing me. “This is mutant territory isn’t it?” he thought aloud, “I must of messed up. Damn it. Then why aren’t they attacking?” He again looked left and right but seemed to be puzzled, yet when his eyes met mine a mischievous smile came over him. Like a little kid finishing his first puzzle. “I didn’t realise you had control even in these territories Mex, but I should have known, so that’s why they aren’t attacking” His grin became even wider as he looked at me.

“Who are you?” I asked apologetically, “I feel as if I’ve known you for a very long time, I feel like we are best friends, it’s like an answer’s at the very tip of my tongue yet I can’t recall anything?” The boys smile became dimmer, and there was this dark, bitter look in his eyes, “Well I’m not surprised.” He murmured, not really talking to me but more likely himself, “With what happened back there its lucky you’re alive, or maybe not lucky since you’re not one that easily dies.” His smile reformed, and brighter than ever. He grabbed my shoulders. “But you were expecting it, weren’t you Mex? If I recall you said ‘the day this ends, I will remember.’ Or something like that I think. Man, you are one sly fox.”

“What?!”

“And you’ve even lost your memory like you said you would.”

“I said what?”

“And you’re so confused, it’s just adorable.”

“Huh!”

“Personally I didn’t think you had the guts to wipe your own mind, but you sure proved me wrong.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about, if you know something then explain!!!!!!!!!!!!” I exhaled loudly, “Man you’re one stressful guy.”

His grin grew wider

“What’s your name anyway?”  I asked.

“Cal” he said, “Cal Hyder”

“That’s one awesome name.” I complimented “I’m Mex, Mex Cillian.”

His grin grew again- impossibly big, “I know.” Cal laughed

Tia Kyoya

“What the hell was that?” I shouted above the sound of creaking timber, gaining the attention of one of the bewildered subordinates. As I began rebooting systems an attractive young man with stunning green gold eyes, came up to me, shuffling on his feet like an embarrassed puppy.  I instantly thought wimp!

“State your name.” I commanded in my normal superior tone, I liked making these men know who was boss.

“Ashley Barnett sir, I mean ma’am. I just transferred to section B server team ma’am.” I rolled my eyes, great, poor Timothy, getting a fresh newbie wuss who was probably going to die soon.

“So you’re one of Timothy’s subordinates then.” I drawled, feeling suddenly bored, “What do you want?”

“Miss, I just transferred from headquarters, and I have some vital information about the man who just infiltrated our base and the one that rescued him.” Ashley was suddenly standing straighter, alert, a clever gleam playing in his eyes – making me rethink my original opinion on him.

“When I was first assigned to the Syndicate I was working as an information broker in service of the capital.” He explained. “One of the subjects I came across during one of my investigations was that man.”

I smiled at him- finally something concrete- and he smiled handsomely in return, eager to be useful.

“Tell me more Mr Barnett.” I purred.

A smarmy smirk came over his face- which ticked me off, “I’m sorry, Lady Kyoya, however this is confidential information,  I can’t just tell you right off the bat, not without clearance from headquarters first. I mean you could contact the High Command, with your status you’d surely get the information, after some time.”

That little punk was bargaining with me. But he was easy to read, just another pawn of the Capital, terrified of getting kicked out. He wanted a recommendation.

I leaned in closer to him, and murmured in his ear, “I’ll surely let the higher ups know about your astounding capability and efficiency in the next report Mr Barnett” In front of him I took out my tablet and found Ashley’s profile on the server and began adjusting his ratings. “With this I’m sure you’ll become a Lieutenant in no time.” Like a dog getting a bone, he looked happy enough  to wag his tail- obviously he didn’t- but he stared up at me with a strange expression of respect. Pathetic.

He cleared his throat as he watched me put my tablet away and began “The creature who broke through the wall was a member of Abyss, quite a high ranking one at that, his name is Cal Hyder. The Capital has been trying to track him down for a while. He is quite the terrorist.” This raised my eyebrows,“What is this creature’s connection with the one he rescued?”

This just made Ashley smile wider,“Oh that one.”

“Yes the one with white hair, he said his name was Mex Cillian”.

“Oh he’s something else entirely.”

“What do you mean?”

“We have records of him, at least going back a few hundreds of years.”

“What!” I exclaimed drawing in unneeded attention.

Out of the corner of my eyes I could see Timothy re-establishing our shields. Good, things were getting more stable again, if that gaping hole had stayed open any longer who knows what monstrosity would of been lying in wait, readying itself for an attack. The computer system I was working on began rechecking the links on our support units and outputs, the lights re-flickered on. ” CIM restored” echoed the cybernetic voice through the chamber” many of the workers cheered and patted each other on the back.

While everyone was distracted I grabbed Ashley by the shoulder and dragged him out of the chamber and into the long grey corridor beyond it. The pathway everyone nicknamed the path of reckoning.

“He’s an immortal!” I exclaimed.

“Yes and no ordinary one at that, he’s a leader, Cal Hyder is his subordinate.”

“Is he the only immortal we have to deal with?”

Ashley grimaced,“Sadly we have three immortals to contend with, Mex is just the leader.”

“What” I breathed, I felt the blood rush to my head and suddenly I was very lightheaded. “How come no one was informed about this?” I asked quietly.

“Because.” Ashley whispered, “We already have enough trouble as it is, High Command thought people knowing that the immortals were more than just a myth would cause unnecessary uproar.” he sighed. “It hadn’t really mattered before as the immortals kept to themselves and hardly ever intervened in conflicts. Mex is the only immortal the Syndicate has some knowledge of but, we barely know anything about them.”

I glared at him,“So tell me what we do know.”

Ashley coughed, “Well, that’s a hard task.”

Timothy

I looked around to see that my sister was no longer beside me, Liz had disappeared as soon as that monster escaped. While I was controlling the situation Tia had also ditched me. One minute she was there the next she wasn’t- typical- she’d abandoned me to do all the work.

Ten or more minutes later the official technician came, my old mate Matt,“Thanks for finally making it, could you not go faster or something.”

He gave me an annoyed look,”I’m sorry O-great-Timothy, should I go back and attempt to come even faster for you.”

“No it’s fine.” I hurriedly replied, for a second we looked at each other seriously but then a second later we were laughing.

“Man.” Matt whistled,” When I got called I wasn’t expecting this.” He began expertly readjusting the systems then analysing the damage on the gates.

“Yikes!!” he exclaimed, “You’re lucky that the shields came back on, or anything could have come in here, and don’t get me started on the radiation.” he looked at me seriously.

“Honestly, your systems are screwed over, it’s like the thing that broke this down used an EMP bomb. You’re going to have clear out the entire side of this building while I get my team to conduct repairs.”

 I nodded “Understood, how long?”

“48, going on 72 hours.”

I groaned “That’s going to be a big job.”

“It is.” Matt sighed. “And I’ve already got my hands filled with the corridor in sector five, the crew and I are still conducting repairs, we were held back because they needed to clear all the bodies.” Matt made a face, “All those bodies were just gruesome, seriously what were you guys fighting?”

This time it was me that gave Matt a face, he sighed. “I know, I know, it’s out of my damn jurisdiction. But, for once I wish you would give me answers, that way I could sleep at night easier.” I again I felt sad, all this fear and hate because of those damn creatures, I hate them, every day people suffer because of the world they ruined. I looked up at Matt and asked, “Is there anything I could do for you?” Matt thought about it for a while,

“Ummm, you could go to the flick generator.” I gave him a puzzled look “It’s the big transformer in the basement of the complex, all I need you to do is flip the switch on the side. It will make all residual and unnecessary power strengthen the shields while I’m working. Usually I’d get some other grunt to do it, but going to the basement is also out of my damn jurisdiction, so since you’re offering.”

“Ok.” I laughed, giving a mock salute, as I walked away Matt yelled at my back.

“Make sure you go to generator RF5, it’s the one for this side of the building.”

I waved to him to as I walked.

“Don’t forget.” he shouted.

“Whatever.” I yelled back.

Tia Kyoya

“First of all I am going to tell you some serious revolutionary info here.” he stated “I want you to forget everything you’ve ever thought, or thought that you knew.” Ashley commanded. “Because all of that is wrong, nobody really knows what is going on. Even you Miss high ranking officer.” His eyes smiled, he was mocking me again.

“So tell me then, Mr. Barnett, what is this revolutionary info that you apparently know?”

“You could also say this is obvious information. Even you know it, you just don’t want to admit it. Yet everything is obvious when you look in-between the lines.”

I frowned at him, “What is that supposed to mean?”

“It means, that everything is a lie, the Capital is a lie, and the 11/03/2389 catastrophe was also a lie. Everything that this Syndicate is aiming towards is a lie. You’re just a soldier, a chess piece in their game. You found out that the Creatures of Abyss were your enemies and you accepted it as fact, you hate their guts because you have no one else to blame. But the truth is a lot scarier Miss Kyoya! I wonder; do you even have the guts to know the truth?” His voice was cold, barely any expression, yet his eyes had the glint of madness.

But what he was saying didn’t make sense, nothing he said answered my questions about that Cal Hyder or Mex Cillian. All he had spouted so far was just random conspiracy. Conspiracy theories that could have me killed for treason against the Capital if we were overheard. I gave Ashley a baleful stare, I raised my hand to reprimand him, but just as I was going to tell him what I thought he started laughing. A slight chuckle that raised his chest and made his mesmerising eyes sparkle, “You are such an idiot.” He said, “Let me show you something, okay” he grabbed my hands. And for a second- just a second- a second that felt like a millennia; the world around me was warped from everything I knew.

It was at that point when I felt panic, he was also a Creature of Abyss, shit!

Here is the start of Part 2, where the story starts to pick up. In this segment we’ll learn about the plot: The war between the Humans and Creatures of Abyss, the dystopian modern world, the disruptive ecosystem, the relationship between the characters, and the various conspiracies.

A Fairy Tale Prince- Chapter 10 (end to intro)

Walking so fast that I was practically being dragged by him, his firm grip clamped on my wrist, my breathe coming out in hurried gasps. By this point we had left the ship far behind, we had separated from Michael and Val, left the taxi to the airport and were running to catch a flight.

Rivulets of sweat ran down my forehead, down my back; making the white dress shirt I was wearing cling to me, I was certain that there were large sweat stains around my armpits as well. I wasn’t used to the humidity. I wasn’t used to the thermal heat of others surrounding me. It terrified me, but I wasn’t able to dwell in this terror as Ray pulled me through the crowd.

The process went rather quickly. Ray handed me a document which I later realised was a passport. It had the name ‘Matt Damon’ on it; the date of birth to the country of birth were all false other than the picture on it, which was most certainly my face. When I think of it now I should have been terrified walking through those customs with a fake passport and boarding that flight. However, I didn’t know any better, instead I was excited. As I boarded the metal aircraft that Amanda had only ever mentioned to me a few times, my heart was thudding. I wondered ‘How could this thing fly?’, ‘Will this really take me up into the sky?’, ‘Is it safe?’ These questions whirred and whirred inside my head.

When Ray and I were seated all I could do was glance at him nervously and glance out the small porthole window, frozen in panic and anxiety. Ray seemed to notice how nervous I was, and laughed slightly, his normal mocking yet gentle laugh, whispering into my ear. “It’s natural to be scared of planes. But, trust me when I tell you that this will  be the least of your concerns when the time comes.” I gulped in greater fear at his words.

We were sitting in economy class, I remember in front and behind me were people chatting, going about their day to day lives. I considered whether I should ask them for help. As common sense dictates I had no reason to follow the dangerous Ray, this was a kidnapping after all, perhaps if I made a commotion someone would come and help. However, back then I had no experience interacting with people. The first near to normal people I had met had been Michael, Val, and Ray, and they were sinister and strange. In my mind even the small child sitting next to the old man exactly opposite us was absolutely terrifying, I couldn’t trust anyone. Furthermore with Ray sitting right beside me who was to say he wouldn’t hurt me or hurt others around us if I caused a commotion. It really wasn’t worth the risk. Thus with all those thoughts in my mind, filled with endless panic, the plane slowly began its drive down the runway.

From the window I could see fences and fields flowing past us, the images became blurry. It was just like the time in the taxi, vehicles that moved this quickly had only been apart of my fantasies before I had met Ray. Then with a numbing lurch the plane suddenly took to the air, I nearly screamed as I saw the land becoming smaller and smaller. I quivered in my seat and had silent streaming tears down my cheeks, likely because it wasn’t until that point did I really realise I was leaving home. That I would no longer have the life I had before. Although it could be considered a strange life of a prisoner I had still lived in luxury, I had been loved by my mother and I had been blissfully ignorant.

As I saw those willow-o-wisp clouds flitting past the window, as the plane slowly rose above them, I found myself looking down on my past innocence. At that time I thought, ‘Goodbye.’

Now the introduction is over, after Chapter 10 the real thrilling adventure begins. Stay tuned! 🙂
