An Encounter.

As Aillil turned page after page of the old fables his grandfather had left him, he found himself entranced by the tales of Branwen, Cuchulainn, Tuatha de Danann, Arthur and his knights. He found himself wishing for the magic of the past to return to the present. He wondered why no one truly believed in these tales anymore, he wondered where the bards whom would slip into the Otherworlds, had disappeared to. He wistfully looked to the sky, day dreaming about Finn and his Fianna.

He wanted to prove these legends true. Aillil was frustrated. To him it felt as if the magic of the world, it’s pure quintessence was at the very tip of his fingertips but it was so very out of reach. Why was this? Why was it all so frustrating?

One evening in irritation, when the night was old and souls at rest, Aillil took his bike and pedalled into the mountains near his home. He reached out to the moon. It was so big in the sky, the stars so bright it felt like with just a simple grasping motion he could capture the heavens and join the heroes, gods, and goddesses in their paradises. Yet no matter how much Aillil pedalled it was fruitless. He was soon worn out, staring at his hands, lying on the grass of the mountain fields looking at the night.

“Why! I know you are real! Show yourselves, Show yourselves to me!!!” He yelled to no one in particular, by this point he’d already given up. He expected no response to his cry and was preparing to get back on his bike to ride home into the comfort of his bed and family.

Yet then he heard, “We hear your call.” It was a childish and faint voice that was carried by the wind to his ear.

“Join us.”

Aillil looked up and he saw the most bewitching fairies, it was like in the tales, as if they had just rode out of their underground palaces, they glowed with a celestial glint. They harboured treasures from Avalon and wore garments embroidered with the ethereal designs and jewels.

The male fairy extended his hand to Ailill, “Won’t you join us on this eve of Beltane?”

Aillil was shocked, he couldn’t believe this was actually happening. Filled with intrigue and excitement he grasped his hand. “Yes. Yes please!”

They giggled at him, and then he was pulled onto the back of the male fairy’s white and proud steed.

Aillil left with them into the unknown, and he never came back.

After I read a novel, watch an anime or read some of my favourite fables I find myself wondering about the truths of this world. I want to reach out and grasp the mysteries this realm has to offer. I want them to reach out to me. At the same time, unlike Aillil, I don’t think I would have the courage to accept that invitation and go into the unknown so brazenly.

Would you go with the fairies?

A Hyper Japan Journey! (2017)

This Summer I had my first ever journey to Hyper Japan, an event that I had been highly anticipating for over a year, and it most definitely lived up to my expectations.

For those who don’t know what Hyper Japan is, it is a festival held in London, it is the UK’s largest event that celebrates Japanese culture and cuisine. It is held twice a year, in summer (Summer festival)and winter (Hyper Japan Christmas market.) At Hyper Japan you can experience live concerts by Japanese celebrities, and experience Japanese food, anime, Japanese gaming and clothing.

The day was the 14th of July. My Sister and I woke up especially early that Friday Morning so as to iron our outfits, put on our contact lenses and be super extra and kawaii for the day. The journey began as I ran to the train station with my sister and bought my London day travel card. Whilst waiting at the station we took cute selfies and then headed towards London. We got off at Limehouse and then took the DLR to Shadwell.

It was at this point that google maps told us to to walk to the venue and that it would take 4 minutes or less, however since my sister and I are hopeless at directions we had no idea which way google maps was taking us until I saw people that were dressed in cosplay or just had that ‘I-am-going-to-a-japanese-convention-vibe’ around them. We were so hyped we practically leaped on them, asking them whether they were also attending ‘Hyper Japan’ and we were delighted when they said ‘yes’.

We began exchanging names as we walked, two of the people we met there was a lovely girl that I’ll call C and a tall boy with green hair that I’ll call S. They both seemed so much more composed then my sister and myself that I assumed that they were older than us. So you can imagine my face when they told us they were 16. They were such wonderful people, so much so that we became instant friends and ended up spending the entire day together.

When we eventually reached Tobacco Dock we lined up, and I must tell you that in comparison to other events which I’ve attended the line for Hyper Japan went very quickly and smoothly. I think we barely stood for 10 minutes before the line started moving and even when it stopped it was brief.

The first thing that you’ll see when you get into Hyper Japan are the super Kawaii merch stores. They sell Japanese influenced designed shirts, anime posters, hair pins, accessories, pins, DVD’s you name it. Also as you walk around you can also see a lot of decora fashion trends and Decora girls and boys. I love Decora girls I think they’re so cute, I myself have never had the time try out the fashion trend, and I’m not sure if I could do it as successfully as I lack the experience and my make-up skills still have a long way to go. I am quite annoyed because I only attended Hyper Japan for the Friday session and I really wanted to meet Kurebayashi (an instagram star and famous Decora girl) however as much as I searched for her on Friday I wasn’t able to meet her.

There were also many cute cosplayers and general people milling around that came to enjoy the culture of the event which I met and had a great time with.

I myself bought a lot of posters, t-shirts, sake, chopsticks, pocky and some CD’s of some of the Japanese artists that I like such at the Gazette, The Age of Civil wars, and Toriena. I was especially excited that I got to meet The Age of Civil wars and Toriena at Hyper Japan, they performed live and it was so amazing, in the pictures above you can see me posing with them. I also met the lead vocalist for a band I like named Broken Doll, Sachi was so lovely and she took a group picture with myself and my friends.

Then there were the Tokyo Rickshaws!!!! They were the kindest people ever, they were so talented at singing, dancing and they were all so handsome (taking my mind out of the gutter) they were so awesome and lovely. The Hyper Japan official website describes them as— “Visit the traditional neighbourhood of Asakusa in Tokyo, and you’re sure to see rickshaws rolling around, snug tourists being pulled along by strong young men known as “shafu.” Tokyo Rickshaw is made of of four such men, who have taken the art of being “shafu” to a whole other level. Combining exciting music and acrobatics, this dance/music/acrobatic unit presents an unforgettable stage show embodying the spirit of Japanese-ness! “

Then there is also Toriena, I am mentioning her again because I absolutely love her, I don’t listen to trap or dubstep music often but when it comes to her I am all over it. Her music is just so fun to listen to and she is so kind!!! When she autographed my CD she said she liked my hat and that I was ‘kawaii!!’ I nearly died.

Then there was SHIN, former vocalist of the Visual Kei band ViViD. I was really looking forward to seeing him there on Friday, and I not only got to see him live I also got to get his autograph and he is amazing. I didn’t get a clear video of his performance but this is a very good one that an amazing human uploaded.

You know that moment of tranquility you have when you’re at home, you’re heart is at peace and you feel like you found the destination you truly belong. That is how I feel every time I attend a Japanese or anime-related event. When I am surrounded by people of like-minds, where you can freely express your interests without being judged, where you can have a good time and embrace a new culture. That was the thrilling tranquil part I loved about Hyper Japan.

And as I went home with the new friends I made that day (and my sister) I found myself determined to enjoy such an event again. When the sun set on July 14th it also set on a satisfying and fantastic day.

This was supposed to be a more controlled piece of writing, but as I’ve been busy working lately I didn’t have much time to post lately or spend writing this, so it has ended up being more of a fun post listing the great things about Hyper Japan. But I hope these list of experiences show you how fun Hyper Japan is, and you can put it on your list of festivals you want to attend.

Winter Snow

Squeals came from the bedroom as Isabelle and Catherine wake up and see the first snow of the season waving by their window. The winter snow fell thick and heavy, a blanket, that hid the rough and ugly parts of the world.

Isabelle ran to her parents bedroom, her little feet moving faster then lightning. She banged on the door. “Mummy!!!! Daddy!!!!Mummy!!!! Daddy!!! Mummy!!!” The screaming continued until Isabelle’s tired Mother came out, her hair tousled, bags underneath her eyes.

“Didn’t I tell you that Mummy needed to sleep in today, I had such a late shift yesterday. And it’s only 6am Isabelle!!!” Groaned their Mother. She yawned.

A second later her Father popped out the bedroom door and scooped up Isabelle in his arms. “Good Morning Princess. What’s all the ruckus?”

Isabelle squealed in her Father’s arms and then shrieked “Mummy, Daddy, it’s snowing.”

“Snowing!” exclaimed the parents in unison.

The Mother felt a tug on her legs, it was little Catherine pulling her, “Everyone, Everyone!!! We must see the snow.”

Laughing the parents humoured Isabelle and Catherine, following Catherine who pulled them to her bedroom. As the parents gazed out the large double-glazed windows whilst hugging their children, the Father sighed, “It’s going to be hard driving to work in this.”

“It’s so pretty!!” chirped Isabelle and Catherine.

The Mother kissed both her girls on the forehead, “I love the winter snow too.”

I love heartwarming scenes, that are so simple, like a family being brought together by some winter snow. When I was younger similar occurrences happened, and as I grow older I appreciate the more innocent moments of the past. I hope in the future I can be happy and have cute moments like this with my own kids.

Comment and tell me sweet and simple childhood memories you have.

P.S sorry for posting this late, I’ve been doing lots of shifts at my part-time job lately

Flash Fiction, The adventures of Max

Fated to be

Max reached his hand out to grab a Haribo packet from the top shelf, yet as his hand touched the sweet packet so did a hand belonging to someone else. Max pulled with all his might, ‘This is the last packet.” he thought, ‘There is no way I’m giving this up, I need to fuel my sweet addiction for today.’

Max turned to face the owner of the hand which was attempting to steal his sweets. Just as he was about to angrily yell ‘try another store’ he was stunned into silence.

“Max, is that you!?” exclaimed the owner of the hand, “Oh my God!! It’s me Tyler! Don’t you remember me!”

Max gasped, how could he forget. It was Tyler his best friend, or more like former best friend. They had gone to the same school since they were young, they had been neighbours, their parents had been friends, they even shared the same birthday. However, Tyler moved away with his family abroad, and Max had been left all alone.

They had exchanged letters but eventually they both got tired of sending them. Now Max was a University Student living in his student accommodation. He had long since believed that they would never meet again, in fact he assumed Tyler had forgotten about him entirely. Yet here they met in an old, run down corner store, like fate was pulling them together.

“Tyler I can’t believe this.”

“What are the chances that we would meet like this Max!”

“Well I always said we were fated to be—”

“Fated to be best friends!!”

This is a short 260 word flash-fiction piece I was going to enter into a competition but I ended up submitting a different one instead. This story is also my own secret aspiration, there are a few friends that I have completely lost touch with that I would love to meet again. So I really emphasise with Max. I hope you enjoyed reading this.

Beneath Black Blood- Chapter 10

“The struggle for power is universal in time and space and is an undeniable fact of experience. It cannot be denied that throughout historic time, regardless of social, economic and political conditions, states have met each other in contests for power.”

Chapter 10- Human Nature

Mex Cillian

As I opened my eyes I could see that the sun was no longer up and the burgundy moon hung in the black sky like a devils eye. Dust swept around us, only when it settled did I notice the derelict building in front of us; it was a grey old complex that looked like it would topple over at the winds slightest touch and break into millions of tiny pieces.  Half of it was sunk into the ground and the other half looked like it was clinging to life. It was pitiful.

“What is this place?” I asked Cal, who was stretching, panting heavily, his breath crystalising into ice.

“Geesh, that took a lot out of me.” Cal moaned, looking up at me, “This is our temporary shelter, it isn’t some swanky hotel, but compared to some other places I’ve seen, this is a paradise. We need to lie low while we’re still in Human territory.” Cal reassured as he saw the wary look I was giving the building. “We’re only staying the night until the sun comes up; some scary things come out when it’s dark so it’s better not to travel right now, trust me.”

“What kind of scary things?”

“Believe me, you don’t need to know. Now that you don’t have your memories it’s better that you learn these stuff gradually. Some things are just too disturbing for words.”

I nodded and began heading towards the entrance or what I thought was an entrance but in reality just some gaping hole in the side. Cal jumped to his feet and jogged to catch up.

“You know.” Cal said. “This place used to be a shopping centre, not only here; all of this wasteland used to be one gigantic city district with massive buildings and houses everywhere. It used to be the place to go… People used have a lot of fun here.” He muttered the last part under his breath, so I only just heard it. “But then of course that isn’t the case anymore.” He grumbled angrily, kicking the dirt. “About 100 years ago this place became a nuclear war zone, I think it was some dispute between countries, I don’t really care. All I remember is seeing crowds of people and the next everyone was gone. We only just made it out of there.” Cal kicked a big rock, that was twice the size of his head- may I add- and sent it flying. “And do you know what really makes me mad?!” Cal continued I nodded although I think it had been a rhetorical question. “Is that that stupid government, that dumb police, The Capital and their stupid hound dogs, think they have the right to blame us for all the things that they’ve done. They blame us for all their wars, their casualties, their dumbass mistakes. And they think that by killing creatures like us the world will become some happy place. Sometimes people are just so stupid.”

He fumed for a second, and went silent, but what he had said raised my curiosity. First off 100 years ago, I knew I was probably older than I looked and I had lived for a long time but seriously. I had so many questions I wanted to ask Cal.

We made it into the ‘building’ which was no better than the outer appearance, but it was definitely more comfortable than outside at least, well anything was more comfortable than outside. Cal settled on the ground, leaning against a brick wall that was chipped and looked ready to collapse, but Cal didn’t care. I did the same. Plopping down right next to Cal. I opened my mouth to ask him the questions that we all probably wanted to know yet he spoke before I could.

“There are probably a lot of things you want to know right.” Cal started, his sharp blue eyes staring at me with some scary intensity. “Well I’ll tell you, but it’s kind of a long story. So just be prepared to stay up all night.” He paused, and I shuffled into a more comfortable position whilst he rummaged in his jacket that was hanging around his waist and tossed me a large bottle of water. Where had he been keeping it? His jacket must have been bigger than I originally thought.

As I drank, Cal began talking again,“You’ve probably figured out that I’m not human and that the same goes for you, right?”

“Yeah.”

“Let me begin telling you that there are two sides.”

“Two sides.”

“Yh. The Humans and Us.” He sipped some water, “We are nicknamed by the Humans as Creatures of the Abyss. That’s because they claim we came out of nowhere, that we are the origin of all evil…Of course we aren’t though, that’s just Human propaganda bullshit. Keeps all the other humans under control, makes them think they have a common enemy. That’s why Humans are dangerous and incredibly hostile to our kind. Even their police force will butcher us on contact. If I hadn’t come in time their police would have definitely made you suffer.”

“They were the police force?” I was surprised, for some reason when I thought of police I envisioned hard working earnest people fighting for justice and they definitely didn’t look like it. Cal just nodded sadly.

“Yeah, it makes me so depressed about what society is like these days.” Cal sighed, “Don’t ask any questions anymore Mex, I told you this is going to take all night so wait until after.” I gave him an apologetic look and Cal coughed and then said, “Our kind has been around a lot longer than humans have. Humans egotistically believe they own the world because they have the superiority in numbers and in the past they built tall buildings and advanced states. Due to a treaty made long ago, called the Yggdraisal treaty, many of our kind decided not to meddle in Human affairs. We lived peacefully with them in coexistence. However humanity is a destructive race by nature, that are selfish and sceptical. Each civilisation they built, each empire would eventually crumble and fall given enough time. Our race used to stand by and watch as they caused their own senseless destruction, however that all changed when they began destroying the Earth along with them.” I was entranced by Cal’s words and leaned forward as I listened attentively. “They made weapons of mass destruction, they made biological weapons that spread diseases and famine, they polluted the water and the air, they destroyed the world that we shared together.” Cal’s eyes seemed to reflect the horrors of war and his purple and blue flames began to spark around him. I wondered what tragedies he had seen. “Because of this many of our own kind struggled to survive. Spirits and nymphs of nature that belonged to the forests or the rivers, our friends died one by one.” As he spoke I felt growing emotions of anger, frustration and sadness.

“Our species were always kind to the humans and never gave them trouble, allowed them to reign over this Earth, and that was how they repaid our kindness. That’s why the leaders of our race decided that we must go to war and put the humans in their place. 11.03.2389 was the day the war began.”

He grabbed my hand, “Mex, you are one of our great leaders.”

Timothy

“What is this?” I asked as I felt the floor shaking with some strange vibrations.

Fallen winked at me, “Oh that is the fun job I have for you.” she turned from me and began walking away, “Aren’t you coming Timothy.”

“Ah! Yes!” I yelped and followed her like the dog I was.

Half an hour passed.

Fallen and I had been walking through endless corridors and I was beginning to feel wary of. I honestly didn’t care what kind of job Fallen wanted me to do, I trusted one of the greatest warriors of my era, but for some reason I was feeling unnerved.

I didn’t like it; I didn’t like the vibrations I was feeling under my toes. Harmonious waves. I could hear each buzz in my ear as if little fairies were singing in it. Damn fairies, just thinking of those Abyss pests made my fingers twitch, wishing I had my gun at hand. What was this?

“What is this?” I finally aired my thoughts.

“This is a state secret.” Her sexy voice was filled with seriousness, “Imagine this.” She said, “What if you could change time, or become invincible or open a pocket dimension and hide all your deepest darkest secrets inside.”

“I don’t understand.” I breathed, she patted my back.

“Bear with me.” She said “This is the weapon we have been developing, one that can give us an advantage over the Abyss.”

“An advantage…What do you mean?”

Fallen smiled viciously. “What if we could mimic their abilities, those of the abyss.” Her eyes glimmered with fanaticism, “Yet more than mimic them, we could rewrite history itself and eradicate the Abyss entirely.”

“How would that be possible…unless…the experiments the labs said failed…succeeded.”

She smiled at me, “You’re one intelligent boy Timothy” I couldn’t tell whether she was mocking me or not, “Yes what if we re-wrote this world. There are many versions of earth, different dimensions with people that share the same souls as us but have lived out entirely different lives. We have been developing a method to access these worlds using knowledge we have gathered from Abyss creatures. With this we could reset the Earth, take away all the problems. We could go outside without masks or heavy gear.”

She reached out her arms like she was seeing this dream in front of her.“When the scale broke a few hundred years ago, the monsters came and attacked us. Now we will bite back, we will avenge our fallen comrades.”

“You sound just like Tia.”

“You mean Major Tia Kyoya.” she laughed, “Oh we most definitely share the same ideals. However the one I need right now is you, Timothy.”

As she said that we walked into a bright cavern and I saw the most bewitching sight. There were blue, pink, and green lights that danced and swayed, they burned like fire and yet weren’t hot or cold. It was vibrant, constantly changing colours. And at the Centre of these things was a rock of ice; it was transparent and inside of it I could see a man. No an abyss creature, his hair white his skin deathly pale. For some reason it reminded of the Abyss creature that escaped from our base earlier, I think its name was Mex. Yet unlike Mex it’s white hair was so long it wrapped around it body, and it had strange rainbow coloured markings on its body. It was naked, in the fetal position and frozen in the ice. It was the source of the vibrations.

Fallen gazed at it, she stared at it with disgust. She despised it.

“It is called Sync. It was the first creature of the Abyss humanity ever came into contact with. It is one of the three immortals that we know of.”

“Immortal!?”

“I’ll explain it later. But he is the creature that has all the answers to defeating the abyss, and you are going to help me find these answers.”

“Me! But..But how?”

“You will link with it.”

“Link?!”

Chapter 10!!! yayy 🙂 Dear Readers do tell me what you think of the story so far. And also which side are you on. Humanity or the Abyss?

A Motionless In White Concert

My second ever concert experience was to see MIW. It was all due to the hard efforts and enthusiasm of my best friend who was, and I think still is, a complete fan-girl over the band. I remember how she was especially excited because their third full length album ‘Reincarnate’ had come out earlier that year in September, and she was dying to hear it live in their November concert.

It was at the Forum, a Concert hall in London. I remember getting many trains and walking down many roads to get there, my friend and their mother in tow. (We were too young to go on our own). I would like to go into the finite detail about how I felt travelling there on that day but sadly my memory is hazy and the journey itself wasn’t exactly the highlight of the event. All I remember was that my best friend was very excited. She was practically spewing to me everything she knew about the band, she needed to educate me because my 15 year old self was sadly ignorant about MIW.

I at the time only knew a few things about MIW. I liked their music but generally being a Visual Kei fan who listened to X- Japan, L’arc en Ciel, Acid black cherry, and the Gazette I generally didn’t pay too much attention to western bands when I was younger. I only went because my best friend was a huge fan of MIW, and who doesn’t love going to a concert. I loved the sensations that a concert gives, such as when you feel the heavy bass thrumming on the floor, the group excitement from all these fellow concert goers that was simply contagious, also seeing some kicking music live is also a brilliant feature of a concert. So I was anticipating the event, just not to the same degree as my friend. (Author’s note: I am not as ignorant as I was back then, just wanted to say I really love Motionless in White now.)

We came, I believe 5 hours early this was because my best friend, who was more experienced at going to concerts than myself, said it would be better to go early as we didn’t want to be in the back of the line. She was completely correct, as even when we got there ( and we got there early), there was quite the huge trail of people starting to grow at the entrance of the venue. I remember us getting relatively close to the entrance despite this and sitting down amongst other concert goers. My friend was dressed in her new-rocks and this lovely black dress with black leggings. I recall that myself, whose clothes were mostly bought by my own Mother were stripey and green. My best friend’s hair was bright red and black, I too had similarly coloured braids at the time, but I remember feeling under dressed and not as cool as her, my glasses made me look nerdy, and she really had that rock-star vibe going for her. I saw others in the line also wearing their fantastically designed ripped/slashed clothing, with their Demonia boots and amazing hairstyles. I kept thinking how amazing everyone looked, and how one day I would aspire to mimic their styles.

Then it happened, perhaps by stroke of luck because we came so early, but I heard people whisper. “Chris Motionless is coming out to greet fans.” My best friend squealed in anticipation. I was also shocked, although I wasn’t the greatest of fans at the time, I still knew who Chris Motionless was. In shock  I whispered, “Chris Motionless!?” however My friend took that the wrong way. “Alexia!” she hissed a me, “How could you not know who Chris Motionless is!?” I wanted to explain that I did but for some reason I just acted like I was ignorant and played it off like I didn’t.

Eventually Chris Motionless came up to us, he stood with my best friend . I took a picture of them both together. God, I remember saying to them ‘Say Cheese’ and ‘smile’ like a complete twat, yep if I could dig a hole straight to China I would of back then. I was too embarrassed to take a picture with him myself, which ended up being one of my biggest regrets later on in life. Although I know I shouldn’t still be caught up on it, it was three years ago, but it still kind of haunts me.

After that we stayed in the line for 5 hours, there was a cafe nearby that you could use to go to the toilet. My best friends Mother (Who is like the most awesome human ever by the way) bought us food and drinks as well. Although I wanted to talk to other people in the line, and I think we did slightly, I remember being too shy and not really knowing what to say. So instead, as I do when I’m nervous, I started babbling to my friend. Saying complete nonsense, probably even annoying the heck out of her. But, she’s lovely so she never told me if I annoyed her or not.

Then when the sky had began turning a bit dark the doors to the concert opened, and the crowd; and I say crowd because the line I believe at the point was gigantic, rushed in. The Concert hall was dark, I remember seeing a bar to the side where people were getting drinks. My best friends Mother had a seat on the balcony, and we were in Standing, so alone we descended toward the front of the stage.

After a while of chatter a band that I don’t really recall the name of came out, they were opening the stage and they welcomed us all with a roar. They were okay I guess. I liked the guitarist and found myself jumping up and down to the beat a bit. I remember this one guy in the audience went a bit wild, I guess he was a fan of them. I think he tried to start his own little mosh pit, but all that generated was a bout of swearing in his direction. Even now I find it hilarious. (Researched and the bands name was Devilment)

Soon they had finished and then Lacuna Coil came out, Andrea Ferro and Cristina Scabbia’s vocals took my soul on an adventure I tell you. To be honest I didn’t know much about the band when they came on the stage but after they were done I swear to you I became a near die hard fan. I just loved it. Sadly these were the only decent quality picture I got of them. I was too busy headbanging :). I haven’t seen them in concert since then but I hope to get the opportunity to in the future.

Then as usual the headliners are always the last to appear on the stage. Motionless in White came out with a bang. It was like the entire crowd had a spring in them, because suddenly everyone had sprang out of control. I can’t specifically remember what Chris Motionless said but I remember it driving everyone crazy and when the first chord of ‘Reincarnate’ came out my best friend was jumping up and I followed the hysteria. The excitement was just too contagious. It was such a freaking epic concert that I felt like kicking myself for my previous luke-warm excitement, and wishing I had taken a picture with him. Ahhh the stupidity of youth, alas I had lost my chance.

So when the concert was over although I was buzzing like I’d been struck by lightning I still felt a tinge of regret. Thus when I saw them selling shirts of the concert near the exit I spent £10 and bought it on the spot. I still have it, it’s a pretty epic memento. I found myself hugging it as we got on the underground, many other concert-goers went on the same train, so it was quite a lovely sight seeing a train packed with goths, punks, and metal heads alike.

And here it is. My experience at a Motionless in White Concert. Comment and tell me about your concert experiences.

The Last Sprint- “A-Level Exams”

Today I have made my last sprint.

British students, although not all, today are patting themselves on the back and screaming hallelujah to the heavens. Yes today is an amazing day where most of the British youth, aged averagely at 18, have finally done the final spurt to crossing the finish line of a marathon called A-Levels.

This marathon for myself began nearly 2 years ago, when an earnest 16 year old decided after gaining her GCSE results, filled with hope and endless expectations, to step on the starting line for preparation to University.

Of course, little did 16 year old me realise that this marathon would be a far more difficult process than I ever could’ve anticipated. It wasn’t just a change in education, a leap into a higher realm of learning, but also there was change in environment and in mentality. Through this Marathon I have gone through a journey of self-discovery and growth.

When I started My A-levels I had gotten decent-enough GCSE grades and was able to attend a grammar school that was my top choice to continue my higher studies. When I had gone to the open evening for the institution I was dumbfounded by the energy of the students, the passion of the teachers and the challenges of the subjects. So without a second thought I had excitedly grabbed my father’s arm and yelled ‘I am attending this sixthform/college.’

I had the option of picking four subjects, so I chose, Government and Politics (which I knew nothing about at the time), English (because I always had a passion for writing), Business Studies (because I liked it and did well in the subject at GCSE), and Physics (because I was obviously out of my freaking mind.)

And when the cool breeze of September came I rushed there in my neat uniform filled with endless enthusiasm, however Sixth-form was more difficult. Meeting new people and trying to make new friends (only 1 of the friends I already knew attended the same institution). Trying to keep up with the classes in general became a great difficulty for me.

I admit that there were times in this marathon that I have fallen over and cried bloody tears, felt isolated and all alone.

The marathon called A-levels had all kinds of competitors. There were the people that are so naturally intelligent that they would leave you behind in their dust, choking on their fumes; there were those that ran in groups and supported each-other and had known each other long before the race started, there were some that used their money to buy expenses cars and just drove down the race like it was nothing. I felt jealous of all these competitors.

Then it struck me. Why give up and be walked over now? These types of competitors in the marathon called A-levels are everywhere in the race called life. If I couldn’t get through this finish line I might spend eternity defeated.

So after I fell over the first time, after I cried, after I became frustrated. I picked myself back up and I decided I was going to cross that finish line with them, using my passion. I’m not the smartest person, but I make up for what I lack in buckets of effort. When I didn’t understand, couldn’t answer a question, and generally made a fool of myself, I kept trying. I kept putting the effort in.

When I got my AS level results they were the product of when I had nearly given up into defeat and depression. When I saw them I cheered, because I was a survivor, because I had gotten those not-brilliant-but-still-passable grades in a moment of defeat. And it motivated me to do even better the next year in the A2 of my A-level.

In the summer I paced myself again, I got my equipment with my pens at the ready and my folders on standby. When I began running again it was so much smoother, so much more brilliant. I was determined to get to the end of this race. Along the journey I met some of the loveliest people, I had unforgettable experiences, I ran with a smile.

Today I can tell you that I have finished this race. I have had my last sprint and ran across that finish line.

I had my last A-level business exam at 1:30 pm today. I don’t know my grades yet until August. But, I can promise you that this year I didn’t give up, I tried my hardest, that every step was filled with sweat and gritty determination. I am satisfied with myself.

The moral of this article is to never let yourself be defeated. There will always be people better than you, smarter than you, and wealthier than you. But as long as you never give up, never let the pressure get to your heart, smile until the end when you give your last sprint and cross that finishing line, then you have won.

I am glad that I have done my A levels because they have taught me life lessons that I will take into University and beyond to greater improve myself.

For the non-British reader A-levels are, as stated by Wikipedia, a  “subject-based qualification conferred as part of the General Certificate of Education, as well as a school leaving qualification offered by the educational bodies in the United Kingdom and the educational authorities of British Crown dependencies to students completing secondary or pre- university education.”

Thank you for reading my rant about my A-level experience.
